Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
