Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
