Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
