Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
