Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
