Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
