Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
