Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
