Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
