Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
