Master Craps – Tips and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
