Pickup Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
