Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
