Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
