Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
