Master Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be clever, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
