Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
