Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
