Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
