Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
