Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
