Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
