Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
