Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
