Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
