Become Versed in Craps – Tricks and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
