Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
