Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
