Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
