Pickup Craps – Tricks and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play clever, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
